Drug-related Deaths despite Stable Global Drug Use

According to UNODC latest report, global drug use prevalence has been stabilized, but drug-related deaths are still challenging a wide population of people around the world.
One of the current means of drug trafficking is internet. The important issue is that law enforcement authorities face difficulties in identifying and tracking website owners and users, because these groups use complicated concealment methods to remain hidden. As a result, illicit trade grows in the framework of “dark net” which is a virtual marketplace inaccessible by web search.
Another issue is the globalization of the chemical trade which has made it easier to divert chemicals from legal to illegal uses. Increasing manufacture and trafficking of synthetic drugs needs global monitoring, it cannot be only controlled through traditional supply reduction approaches.
As Mr. Ban Ki-moon puts it, the international community has to strengthen its efforts to confront illicit drugs and direct global society toward a safe and sustainable future. The UNODC chief has also emphasized that firm international commitment is needed in order to achieve sustainable success in drug control. Obviously, a balanced and comprehensive approach with focus on prevention, treatment, social rehabilitation and integration will be able to address both supply and demand.
Although reports reflect a decrease in production and use of some drugs such as Cannabis in different parts of the world, the attention should be directed toward those areas such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, and the like where there is an increase in the area under cultivation. At the same time, there is an urgent need for preventing drug misuse and diversion for illicit purposes.
