Mozambique: Humanitarian toll from Cyclone Chido rises

About 4.8 million people require humanitarian assistance, according to UNICEF.

At least 45 people were killed when Cyclone Chido hit Mozambique on Sunday, a provisional toll released Tuesday by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

While 500 others were injured, the material damage is also significant: 24,000 houses were destroyed. In total, the tragedy has affected more than 180,000 people. Wind gusts reached 260 km/h, and more than 25,000 families are left without power.

To support the victims, the UN has released $4 million in emergency aid. According to UNICEF, about 4.8 million people require humanitarian assistance, and $10 million is needed to meet urgent needs.”
