{"id":1722,"date":"2015-06-14T19:35:42","date_gmt":"2015-06-14T19:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/en.humanrightsagency.com\/?p=1722"},"modified":"2015-06-14T19:35:42","modified_gmt":"2015-06-14T19:35:42","slug":"1000s-of-nicaraguans-protest-controversial-canal-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.agencedh.org\/en\/1000s-of-nicaraguans-protest-controversial-canal-project\/","title":{"rendered":"1000s of Nicaraguans protest controversial canal project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of Nicaraguans have staged a protest rally in a central city to voice their anger at a government decision to give the go-ahead to the controversial construction of a canal through their lands.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, around 15,000 protesters, mainly farmers whose lands lies on the waterway\u2019s planned route, gathered from across the country in the central Nicaraguan city of Juigalpa.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators shouted \u201cNo to the canal,\u201d waving Nicaragua\u2019s national flags during the rally.<\/p>\n<p>The ground was broken last December on the construction site of the Nicaragua&#8217;s Interoceanic Grand Canal, which is aimed at furrowing a transportation passageway between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean.
