For the UN’s top emergency relief official, Martin Griffiths, the increase in humanitarian needs is rather because of the war in Ukraine, COVID-19 and climate change. He refers to countries that have been hit by deadly droughts and floods, from Pakistan to the Horn of Africa.
\nMartin Griffiths also stresses the role that humanitarians should play in international climate discussions, to ensure resilience funding for those who need it most.<\/p>\n

By the end of this year, at least 222 million people will face acute food insecurity in 53 countries. Five countries are already experiencing famine-like conditions, where people, usually children, are dying due to displacement, food insecurity, lack of food, according to the UN emergency relief official.<\/p>\n

Reaching the total amount requested from national and private donors would not be easy; This year’s UN-led global humanitarian appeal is only 47% funded \u2013 a steep drop from previous years.<\/p>\n

According to the Global Humanitarian Overview, in 2023, 45 million people in 37 countries are at risk of starvation.<\/p>\n
