In light of the immense suffering and atrocities it caused, the international community deemed it essential to preserve the memory of these tragic events. To this end, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed May 8 and 9 as Days of Remembrance and Reconciliation, honoring the victims and reaffirming the need to prevent future conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>It was in this spirit that the United Nations was established in 1945, just weeks after the end of the war. Created to save future generations from the scourge of war, the UN\u2019s central mission is to maintain international peace and security.
