Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing a new escalation of violence, with renewed clashes between the FARDC (Armed Forces of the DRC) and AFC\/M23 rebels in South Kivu. Fighting in the Ruzizi Plain has paralyzed several localities, causing destruction, injuries, and population displacement. Meanwhile, in North Kivu, insecurity continues to worsen, with reports of targeted killings, violence against civilians, agricultural looting, intimidation, and abuses in areas under M23 control, as well as repressive acts attributed to certain local authorities.<\/em><\/h6>\n

In recent days, both South Kivu and North Kivu have been deeply affected by armed confrontations, growing insecurity in urban and rural zones, and serious human rights violations. Hostilities resumed early Tuesday in Walungu and Uvira, before spreading across several communities in the Ruzizi Plain, where activities were halted and homes destroyed.<\/p>\n

This renewed fighting comes at a diplomatically sensitive moment, just days before the expected finalization of the Washington peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda. Regional tensions remain high, with Kinshasa accusing Kigali of supporting the M23\u2014an allegation Rwanda denies.<\/p>\n

In Goma, the capital of North Kivu, the security situation is also deteriorating. Violent incidents, targeted assassinations, and abuses reportedly committed by local authorities have intensified fears among residents. Civil society organizations warn of increasing repression, torture, and a growing climate of fear.<\/p>\n

In the M23-controlled territories of Rutshuru and Masisi, reports of violence, intimidation, and looting persist. Witnesses cite degrading treatment of civilians, forced participation in imposed activities, theft, and widespread harassment, particularly during the harvest season. These abuses further weaken communities already affected by conflict and displacement.<\/p>\n

The humanitarian impact is severe, with massive displacement, restricted access to healthcare, loss of livelihoods, and significant psychological trauma. Local organizations are calling for stronger civilian protection and a greater presence of national human rights bodies and international partners.<\/p>\n

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with continued violence and worsening abuses against civilians. The coming weeks will be crucial for the security dynamics in eastern DRC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
