Venezuela: 155 civilians imprisoned by military courts, denounced an NGO

According to the Foro Penal NGO, at least 155 civilians have been imprisoned by order of military courts since the start of the wave of protests hostile to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

260 people were tried by the army, in violation of the Constitution which provides that only soldiers must be brought before military courts, denounced this organization in defense of human rights.

Of these, 155 were sent to jail, the remainder being either laundered or placed on parole.

The wave of demonstrations hostile to the socialist government, which have often degenerated into clashes with the police and looting, have caused 38 deaths and hundreds injured in six weeks, according to the prosecutor’s office.
