Ethnic violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

The DRC government must act against ethnic violence in the country. Above all, it must develop effective and more serious measures to stem this type of violence. Perpetrators of ethnic violence must be held accountable, and people arrested by the government solely because of their ethnicity must be released.

The murder of a soldier on November 9 in Goma, in the east of this country, is a clear example of ethnic hatred in the DRC.

The soldier, « a Munyamulenge, Congolese from the province of South Kivu », aged 42, was attacked and killed by a group of people who « accused him of being an M23 fighter because of his appearance physical ».

ADH is concerned about the growing ethnic dimension in the Democratic Republic of Congo where the recurrence of ethnic violence has already given rise to abundant academic and media literature, fueled by numerous reports from national and international human rights observers.

The DRC government must act against ethnic violence in the country. Above all, it must develop effective and more serious measures to stem this type of violence. Perpetrators of ethnic violence must be held accountable, and people arrested by the government solely because of their ethnicity must be released.

The Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the most multi-ethnic countries in Africa, has some 250 ethnic groups which can be divided into several groups.
