African agri-food system: Revolutionary solutions are needed

Issues such as war, pollution, overexploitation of food resources, and neglect of biodiversity, can endanger the lives of many humans, as well as other creatures, across the African continent.

Game-changing solutions, more investments in smallholder farmers, novel technologies, and new partnerships are required at different levels to ensure the successful transformation of full-scale African-led agrifood systems. As emphasized by the FAO Director General, more attention should be paid to investment in social development, particularly young people, women, and smallholder farmers, while the application of digital agriculture throughout the continent should not be overlooked to ensure food security and resistance.

The immediate effects of the depletion of food resources that are vital for the people and the planet are particularly directed at vulnerable people who have been already experiencing food insecurity. As emphasized by the deputy UN chief, as nutritious food becomes out of reach, many children, women, and those below the poverty line are seriously affected.

Thus, issues such as pollution, over-exploitation of food resources, failure to consider biodiversity, etc., can endanger the lives of many humans, as well as other creatures, across the continent. Only new solutions based on novel technologies and sustainable methods will be able to the future of food systems across the world in general and throughout the African continent in particular.
