Report: Press freedom is “difficult” or “very serious” in 72 countries (RSF)

Reporters Without Borders are concerned about the “risk of a major shift” in the situation of press freedom, “particularly in important democratic countries”.

“Press freedom has never been so threatened,” by pressure attacks, false information, repression and the triumph of “strong men” such as Donald Trump or Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières, RSF) released its 2017 report on Wednesday.

Press freedom is “difficult” or “very serious” in 72 countries (out of 180), including China, Russia, India, almost all countries in the Middle East, Central Asia and Central America, as well as two-thirds of African countries. The world map drawn up by RSF is invaded by red (“difficult” situation) and black (“very serious”).

The press is only free in some fifty countries. RSF is concerned about the “risk of tipping over” the situation of press freedom, “especially in important democratic countries”. (…)
