Sudan: Humanitarian disaster on a devastating scale, and an unprecedented complexity!

Sudan urgently needs the support of the international community to help nearly nine million people who are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and protection in different places, including Darfur.

António Guterres, warned that Sudan was sinking « into death and destruction » at lightning speed. This is indeed a humanitarian crisis unfolding on a devastating scale and with a complexity never seen before in Sudan.

The crisis began after the fighting eruption in mid-April, killing at least 866 civilians and leading to more than thousands of injuries. The capital, Khartoum, and many other urban areas have been hit seriously by the conflict, which has forced over 1.4 million people to leave their homes toward safety beyond the borders.

The clashes have no only affect civilians, forcing them to flee into the neighboring countries, but aid groups’ offices, healthcare facilities, and other civilian infrastructure have been also attacked and devastated, making services almost unavailable. The destruction of infrastructure, along with the shortage of medicines, medical equipment, and food supplies has endangered many lives and exposed all citizens, especially women and children, to irreparable harm, especially as allegations of sexual violence against women and girls have emerged.
