Famine in Somalia: We are deeply concerned about the level of pain and suffering that so many Somalis are enduring

We cannot forget the crisis in Somalia in 2011-2012 when the country was hit by a famine that killed around 260,000 people, half of whom were children under five, nor the disaster of 2017, which had been averted thanks to upstream mobilization by the international community . Today, the country is once again threatened more than ever by the famine crisis. The unprecedented failure of four consecutive rainy seasons, decades of conflict, mass displacement, serious economic problems have pushed the Somali people to the brink of starvation.

The UN reports have highlighted in particular the situation of the two Somali districts which are expected to be plagued by famine before the end of the year. In a joint statement, United Nations agencies sounded the alarm over the country’s drought emergency, insisting that children under the age of 5 would be among the most vulnerable…
